Sanitary pads are used to collect blood from the vagina during menstruation or menstruation. In addition, pads can also be used after childbirth, miscarriage, after surgery in the female area, or in other conditions that cause bleeding from the vagina. Sanitary pads are generally made of cotton. Besides cotton, there are other materials or substances that are added to the pads. Some of them are believed to be harmful to health. Hazardous sanitary pads are:

1. Chlorine gas

Chlorine gas is commonly used in the bleaching process. The use of chlorine in the process of making sanitary napkins is considered unsafe, because chlorine gas can produce carcinogenic dioxins, which can potentially cause cancer.

2. Additional deodorizers

Some sanitary napkins add perfuming agents to the products they produce because they are believed to disguise the smell of blood during menstruation. In fact, the addition of deodorizers to sanitary products is not required. Besides its effectiveness is not proven, the addition of fragrance substances to the pads can actually cause skin irritation in the female area.

3. Pesticides

Due to concerns that sanitary napkins in Indonesia contain chlorine, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia has stated that the chlorine levels contained in the pads on the market are still within safe limits.

Pay Attention to This when Using Sanitary Pads

Even if you use pads that have been declared safe, there are some things you need to do to reduce the risk of health problems when using pads, namely:

Maintain cleanliness of intimate organs

When menstruating, keep the cleanliness of sex organs by changing pads every 3-4 hours. Change pads more often if you experience heavy bleeding. The aim is to avoid the development of bacteria and odor. In addition, always clean the intimate organs with running water when changing pads, when bathing, after every urination or defecation.

Choose pads with the appropriate absorption

Choose a bandage that absorbs according to the amount of blood that comes out during menstruation. The use of pads with extra absorption during menstruation is not recommended, because it will make you rarely change pads. This can trigger an infection. When choosing pads, pay close attention to the ingredients contained. If you have doubts or worries, use washable cotton pads or menstrual cups as an alternative. You can also ask your doctor about which type of dressing is the safest and most suitable for you.
