How to Help Someone Who Has Bloody Ears

Damage to the eardrum can also be caused by other factors, such as being hit hard, being exposed to very loud sounds, or experiencing a more serious head injury. Generally, a damaged eardrum will suddenly ache. As a result, you may not hear well and may be accompanied by bleeding in the ear. At a mild level, the damaged eardrum can heal by itself. A ruptured eardrum can also occur when the pressure inside the ear is not the same as outside the ear. For example, when flying in an airplane that is increasing or decreasing altitude. Can also occur in the sea while diving. Rupture of the eardrum does not always bleed. Vice versa, bloody ears not only caused by rupture of the eardrum.

Give First Aid if the Ear Bleeds

If you or someone has a wound or bleeding in the ear, immediately do first aid. But before giving first aid, consider the condition of the victim. Here's how to give first aid to a bloody ear victim:

Ear sores that cause bleeding

The main purpose of this help is to prevent excessive bleeding.
  • Press the bleeding until the bleeding stops. Then cover the bleeding part of the ear using a sterile gauze cloth and glue it using tape. Avoid sticking it too tightly so as not to interfere with blood flow.
  • Compress the injured part with ice cubes wrapped in cloth or cold food / drink packaging to reduce pain and prevent swelling.
  • Immediately call an ambulance or take the victim to the clinic / hospital for further treatment.

Insects ear intruding

Do this if the ears bleed because of insects.
  • Avoid picking out insects with your fingers because they can trigger the insect to sting the inside of the ear and cause the ear to bleed.
  • While lying down, tilt your head so that the ear hole that the insect enters is facing up, then wait for the insect to crawl out. But it should be noted that even if the insect has come out, the victim must still undergo an examination of the condition of the ear because small parts of the insect might irritate sensitive tissue.
  • If the insects do not come out, pour a little olive oil or baby oil into the ear canal. The goal is that insects cannot breathe or float in oil. Pull the ear lobes slowly back and up to trap the insect in the oil. In the ears of children, pull the ear lobes back and down.

The ear is possessed by a foreign body

Bloody ears can also be caused by the entry of foreign matter. If this happens, do the following:
  • Be calm If the position of the incoming object is visible and easily retrieved, take it slowly using your hands or tweezers. After that, immediately consult a clinic / hospital to ensure all foreign objects have come out.
  • If the foreign object is not visible because it is located deeper, do not force it to look for or take it to avoid injuries that could be more dangerous.
  • Try to position the head tilted with the problematic ear hole facing downward to get the foreign object to come out by itself due to the force of gravity.
  • Avoid doing anything rude to the head in the hope of removing the foreign object.
Perform this step as carefully as possible so as not to cause ear bleeding. If the object has not come out as well, immediately seek medical assistance. If this happens to you or the people around you, especially when the ear hurts, is ringing, has a hearing loss, immediately contact an ENT specialist to get treatment.
